Though not as fashionable as it looks, the Face-kini is surely China’s booming swimming gear today. The Face-kini was invented to keep their sensitive skin safe from exposure to the sun. It is a full-head mask that covers the entire face except the mouth, nose, and eyes. It is often worn with a long-sleeved shirt or a full body wet suit for complete protection.

These beach lovers often want to go to the beach, but are too cautious regarding the sensitivity of their skin. Sunburns are no joke, as excessive exposure to the sun’s rays can eventually lead to skin cancer. The mask also prevents their faces to be stung by jellyfishes or mosquitoes while swimming. Most of the Face-kini users are retired middle-aged women who are more sensitive to the heat. Children are seen wearing the said masks to protect their skin as well.

The Chinese online retail group Taobao has priced the fashion accessories at around £2.50 (RMB 25) each. Ma Ke Water Park offers them in 18 colourful patterns. The masks come in a variety of styles, with different sized eye holes and seam placements.

It is thought that the bright orange versions of the masks can help scare away sharks!

Many people in China have come to shun tanned skin for its negative associations. Pale, white skin has been a symbol of beauty and a privileged upbringing, while tanned skin is a sign of peasantry and outdoor labour, according to Chinese tradition.
